This festive season, Mallard Productions produced a 30 second TV advert for Edinburgh Children’s Hospital Charity’s (ECHC) Christmas Appeal 2023. ECHC believe that nothing should get in the way of being a child, holding the vision of ‘child first, patient second’. They aim to transform the lives of every child and young person treated in Edinburgh’s Children’s Hospital and within the wider healthcare sector across the East of Scotland.
The video itself consists of a time lapse of Poppy, a child who attends Edinburgh Children’s Hospital, and illustrates the regular and arduous nature of repeated hospital visits. For families who have to regularly come to hospital, Christmas can feel like just another day. The video highlights the positive nature of ECHC interventions provided to children like Poppy, which can help to alleviate the issue of boredom and the struggles of missing out that can be experienced by children within the hospital around this time of year.
Poppy’s story and her voiceover overlaid within the video helps viewers to understand the struggles of missing out at Christmas, whilst additionally acknowledging the hard work of NHS and ECHC staff to support these children not only at this time of year, but all year round. The video exhibits a variety of ECHC interventions implemented for the children, such as music and dance performances, and gift giving.
