Scottish Government – Count 14

We were commissioned by Smarts Communicate to create an awareness video for the Scottish Government’s Alcohol Campaign, Count 14.

The Count 14 Campaign was developed to demonstrate what 14 units of alcohol looks like to encourage individuals to think about how their drinking adds up, and how to make informed choices around alcohol. The Scottish Government recommends that adults shouldn’t drink more than 14 units of alcohol per week, and should be spread out over at least 3 days to reduce the short and long term impacts of drinking alcohol.

We filmed comedian and television presenter, Des Clarke, on the streets of Glasgow conducting vox pops with the public to find out what they think one unit of alcohol looks like. Des prompted the individuals to pour a measure of alcohol, both spirits and wine, to understand if their ‘home pour’ exceeded the unit measurement. The vox pops were light-hearted in tone, including commentary about exceeding the limit, with passers by being unsure and surprised by what they are. 14 units of alcohol is equivalent to six pints of medium strength beer, six medium glasses of wine, or seven double measures of spirits.

Since the launch of the campaign and our video with Smarts Communicate, The Scottish Government concluded that awareness of alcohol guidelines increased from 21% pre-campaign to 34% post-campaign, illustrating a significant growth in drinking awareness.

Alcohol consumption is a risk factor associated with many illnesses, such as strokes, heart disease, and cancer. The Scottish Government website has many interactive tools to help users get a better understanding of their consumption by translating their weekly drinks into numerical units.
