Mallard Productions were approached by Scottish Childminding Association (SCMA) to create a professional film to demonstrate how childminders use STEM activities with children in their care settings. STEM activities can be important for children’s development in order to grow their critical thinking, problem solving and motor skills.
SCMA is the only organisation dedicated to supporting childminders in Scotland. They work in partnership with the Scottish Government and local authorities to ensure that policy is established and implemented whilst having consideration for the knowledge and experiences of childminders.
The activities displayed within the video cover a variety of STEM topics, such as maths/numeracy, science enquiry, and exploring their senses. The childminders illustrate how easy it can be to implement STEM practices within their day, and encourage their mindees to continue these activities at home. The video shows that children don’t need the most expensive materials to learn, we just need to get creative.
The video was filmed during the pandemic, therefore, to ensure social distancing and COVID-19 restrictions were adhered to, filming was conducted outdoors within the childminder’s care setting or areas they like to take their mindees. Our film crew followed two childminders with their mindees, capturing them engaging in a range of activities, such as melting jelly from solid to liquid, understanding how gravity pulls water down a pipe, and building bridges. The video highlights the positive outcomes of implementing STEM activities with children. They are happy, excited and engaged in what they are learning with their childminder.
The video was used within the SCMA’s website, social media, and their childminding magazine, all to promote the exploration and discovery that comes alongside STEM activities.
We additionally provided photography for this project. The Mallard Productions photography team produce photos for individuals, small and large businesses and public sector organisations. Our photographers work closely with our film production crew, therefore the quality, colours and tones match throughout all end products.
